REVISA – Recognition of Visual Impairment in (Pre)School Age

Category Project

Ausgangslage und Ziele

With the Recognition of Visual Impairment in (Pre)School Age (REVISA) project, the aim is to identify risky and beneficial decision events in the process of specialized recognition and evaluation of the individual special needs of the child and support measures in the context of visual impairment. We can assume that for some children and adolescents with visual impairment and other impairments, the specific special education needs in the area of vision are not recognized and no visual impairment-specific assessment is conducted. For this reason, this project will examine what decision events: (1) lead to no provision of support through specialized special education measures, (2) make provision of support difficult, or (3) result in such support being provided late. In this way, factors and conditions in different areas can be determined that lead to increased sensitivity at important decision points and thus to early availability of specific support measures for children and adolescents with visual impairment and other impairments.

Question

In the REVISA project, the main research question is:

What risky decision events in the process of recognition, specialized evaluation of the individual special education needs of the child, and support through measures in the context of visual impairment and possible other impairments can lead to, during the school career of children and adolescents: no provision of specialized special education measures, difficulty to provide such support, or support that is provided late?

Methodical approach

REVISA is a qualitative study that is exploratory. The focus is on children and adolescents whose visual impairment is recognized late and who may have additional impairments.

To detect the risky and beneficial decision moments we will first conduct group discussions with professionals (among others, advice and support professionals, teachers). The findings will form the basis for a more detailed survey of the developments over time and the risky decision events therein from the perspective of parents and school psychologists, so as to obtain more comprehensive knowledge about these progressions. The results will then be validated in focus group discussions. The documented risky and beneficial decision events can then be used to draw up recommendations for improving developmental and educational opportunities by means of optimizing the process of recognizing and evaluating special education needs.

Results

REVISA will make it possible to identify risky and beneficial decision events in the process of recognition, evaluation, and support through special education measures for children and adolescents with special education needs due to visual impairment and possible other impairments. On this basis, recommendations will be made for improving these processes and support measures.

The REVISA project is funded by the Swiss National Association of and for the Blind (SNABlind/SZBlind).
