ZEPPELIN - Longitudinal Study – Early Childhood Intervention, 2. Follow-up

Category Project

Ausgangslage und Ziele

The longitudinal ZEPPELIN study examines the question of whether support from birth increases the educational opportunities of children from socially disadvantaged families. The project thus opens up access to parents with social burdens, the majority of whom have a migration background. With its interdisciplinary orientation and long-standing cooperation with the UZH, this experimental longitudinal study from birth to young adulthood is unique in Europe. The sample, design and methodology lead to a rich and unique pool of data in Switzerland, which will be made publicly accessible via FORS in accordance with the SNSF Open Access Policy.

Methodological approach

The study with a controlled trial design (RCT) examines the long-term effectiveness of the «PAT - Learning with Parents» support programme by comparing families from the intervention group (n = 132) with a control group without PAT (n = 116). The aim of the support programme is to strengthen the «family as a place of learning» by means of home visits (twice a month) and group activities (monthly) during the first three years after the birth of the child.

After the baseline data collection in the third month of life, characteristics of the children, parents, parent-child interactions and the school class were recorded at annual measurement points around the 1st, 2nd and 3rd birthdays (ZEPPELIN 0-3) and in kindergarten and the 1st primary school class (ZEPPELIN 5-8). The longitudinal study is now being continued as planned with the second follow-up (2021-2024) supported by the SNSF (ZEPPELIN 9-13).

Results to date

The first research phase, ZEPPELIN 0-3, was successfully completed in 2016 and demonstrated the positive effects of PAT at the age of 3. In ZEPPELIN 5-8, the positive effects were again demonstrated at kindergarten age, such as better language skills and less problem behaviour. In the current follow-up (2021-2024), the long-term effects of early support in primary school will be analysed.
